Alex de Minaur has been knocked out of the quarterfinals by a dominant Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.
Alcaraz was too good from start to finish as he showed the tennis world why he is ranked number one.
The match ended 7-5, 6-2, 6-1.
The Australian played well and was much better than the scoreboard showed.
However, he is still yet to defeat an opponent ranked higher than him at the Australian Open and has never made it past a quarterfinal in a major.
Earlier in the day, Elina Svitolina handed Coco Gauff her equal worst defeat at a grand slam to book her place in the Australian Open semifinals.
Gauff was visibly frustrated in the match and smashed her racquet in the tunnel after leaving the arena.
Women’s top seed Aryna Sabalenka powered past American teenager Iva Jović 6-3, 6-0 in another ominous display to become the first woman into the semifinals.

In the other men’s quarterfinal today, Alexander Zverev defeated the young American talent Learner Tien in four sets.
Zverev pushed back on a question regarding Australia’s crowd support of him and his personal life in the post match press conference, saying “this question is not worth asking anymore”.
Meanwhile, Australian doubles wildcards Jason Kubler and Marc Polmans have progressed to the semifinals. They defeated the twelfth seeds Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul from France.
Well, that was a sad day for Aussie fans who were looking forward to seeing Alex de Minaur reach the semifinals of the Australian Open for the first time.
It just wasn’t meant to be as Carlos Alcaraz showed why he’s the number one player in the world, progressing through in straight sets.

The Demon can hold his head up high though — he’s had a fantastic tournament and we’re proud of him.
In other news, Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina are through to the semifinals after defeating their opponents in spectacular fashion.
Alexander Zverev has also booked his spot in the semifinals once again.
But the fun doesn’t stop there.
Tomorrow we have some more quarterfinals match ups to look forward to:
- Musetti [5] v Djokovic [4]
- Shelton [8] v Sinner [2]
- Rybakina [5] v Swiatek [2]
- Pegula [6] v Anisimova [4]
Again, thank you for joining us today and every day so far of the AO 😊
We’ll be back tomorrow for more, so from all the ABC Sport team tonight, good evening and we’ll see you in the morning!
