STANLEY: INDIGENOUS NAME FOR AIRPORT CITY

0

Anne Stanley, Member for Werriwa, wants an Indigenous name to replace south-west Sydney’s future airport city, Bradfield, and has called on locals to get behind the change.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced in March that the new airport city would be named in honour Sydney Harbour Bridge designer and engineer Sir John Bradfield. The proposed name has been placed on exhibition for public comment by the Geographic Names Board with submissions closing Saturday 4 September.

“I respect the work of Sir John Bradfield and the prestigious additions he has made to our great city. However, Sir Bradfield has received many tributes for his work including a school, a highway and a Federal electorate,” Ms Stanley said.

Ms Stanley agrees, along with other local MP’s and Councillors, that although Sir John Bradfield is a distinguished in Sydney’s history, the new city should have an Indigenous name.

“The new city will sit on Dharug land and, I encourage a review of the naming of the city and strongly recommend an indigenous individual or a significant indigenous term to replace Bradfield. Giving Sydney’s third city an indigenous name is a terrific opportunity to commit and move forward on reconciliation.

“This will eventually grow into Sydney’s third city and a gateway to Australia for visitors coming from all around the world. What better way to welcome those visitors than with a uniquely Australian indigenous name.

“I also encourage everyone to make a submission to the proposal of the name Bradfield on the NSW Government Website,” Ms Stanley said. Submit a review of the proposal here: https://proposals.gnb.nsw.gov.au/currentproposals
