COVID updates: Hospitalisations rise as NSW and Victoria record increase in coronavirus cases

Here’s a quick wrap of what’s happening in COVID news across Australia.

NSW records more than 20,000 COVID-19 cases for second-straight day

New South Wales has recorded 22,577 COVID-19 cases, the second day in a row where more than 20,000 new cases were reported.

There were also four deaths of people with COVID-19 reported.

Hospitalisations rose to 901, up from 832 in the previous reporting period.

There are now 79 patients in intensive care, an increase of 10 from yesterday.

There were 119,278 tests undertaken in the state, down from yesterday’s 148,410.

Victoria records 7,442 cases and nine deaths

It is the fifth day in a row that Victoria has recorded an increase in the number of new cases and is up from the 5,919 new cases reported yesterday.

There are now 24,161 active cases of the virus, and 712 people have died in the current outbreak.

Hospitalisations have risen from 428 on Friday to 451 today, taking the seven-day average to 406.

The figure includes 51 patients in intensive care, with 21 patients on a ventilator.

The health department said a further 47 patients were in ICU but their infections were no longer considered active.

There were 63,026 test results recorded yesterday, as testing sites continued to face heavy demand.

Tasmania cases jump to 428

Tasmania has recorded its largest jump in COVID-19 infections, with 428 new cases recorded in the state.

There were 137 new cases recorded yesterday.

Authorities say that no people are currently being treated in intensive care, but two people are in hospital.

There are currently 938 active cases in the island state.

A total of 224 cases are being treated through the COVID@home program, 79 are in community case management facilities and the rest are either still being assessed for those programs or have declined help to manage their symptoms and isolation.

ACT records 448 new cases of COVID

The ACT has recorded 448 new cases of COVID-19 over the past day, slightly less than yesterday’s total of 462.

Nine people with the disease are in hospital, though none require intensive care.

There are now 1,479 people in Canberra known to have an active infection, down from 1,658 yesterday.
