0
The Good Friday service at St Charbel’s Monastery in Sydney is recognised as the largest of its kind in Australia, drawing thousands of worshippers each year. The solemn Maronite hymns, prayers, readings, and homilies offer a deeply moving experience, leaving a lasting spiritual impression on all in attendance.
This year’s service was held in the presence of Bishop Antoine-Charbel Tarabay, Superior Father Assad Lahoud, and the monastic community. Among the distinguished guests were Minister Tony Burke MP, representing Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, former Prime Minister Scott Morrison (ScoMo), Lebanese Ambassador to Australia Milad Raad, David Coleman – Member for Banks, Jihad Dib MP, Sophie Cotsis MP, and Mark Coure MP. The gathering welcomed a wide array of dignitaries, including local councilors, community leaders, and media representatives.
A large number of school students also participated in the service, accompanied by their families and school staff, joining an estimated 5,000 parishioners in solemn reflection and prayer.
Throughout the service, Bishop Tarabay and other speakers delivered messages centered on humility, love, and selflessness, reflecting the core values of the community. This collective commitment to prioritising the needs of others contributes to the community’s strength and resilience.
Following the liturgy, dignitaries were invited to break the fast with Bishop Tarabay, Father Superior Assad Lahoud, and the monks.
