NSW Premier Glady Berejiklian concerned about ‘evolving situation’ as Victoria COVID-19 cases grow

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has urged NSW residents to avoid unnecessary travel to Victoria as the state deals with a growing COVID-19 outbreak.

The Victorian coronavirus outbreak reached 26 cases this morning — with 11 new infections recorded overnight — and the state is expected to enter lockdown for at least a week.

Ms Berejiklian said she was “worried about the evolving situation” and anticipates travellers from south of the border will need to adhere to Victoria’s lockdown rules.

Health authorities issued an alert for members of a sporting club in the border town of Tooleybuc in the western Riverina after they attended an event on the weekend in Cohuna in Victoria where a confirmed case was present.

Increased testing has been set up in the Tooleybuc area and anyone who attended Saturday’s event is being asked to immediately self-isolate and wait for further advice.

Ms Berejiklian said while borders remain open, she’s urging people to remain very cautious.

“There are 55 crossings of the border and we just ask everybody to do the right thing,” she said.

“We’ve relied on the goodwill of our citizens during the entire pandemic. Let’s not give up now.

“I’m worried about the evolving situation and of course we’ll watch closely to see what the Victorian government announces this morning.”

With the Melbourne lockdown appearing imminent, Ms Berejiklian is also asking Victorians to stay away.

NSW residents are being advised to avoid non-urgent travel to Greater Melbourne and Bendigo as exposure sites in the state rise to more than 60.

Anyone who has been in Victoria since May 12 is being asked to check Victorian health advice about venues of concern.

Ms Berejiklian also issued a call to arms for people in NSW to get vaccinated as the cluster in Victoria quickly expands.

“As we know in a pandemic it’s easy to go from 15 to 20 to 30. Numbers rise exponentially if you don’t get on top of the outbreak, so we’ll be watching the situation closely.

“What’s happening in Victoria is a bit of a wake-up call. We don’t know what’s around the corner.”
