Former NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian has declined the Prime Minister’s offer to run in next year’s federal election, announcing instead a transition to the private sector.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison had made repeated public bids to parachute Ms Berejiklian into the northern Sydney seat of Warringah.
Ms Berejiklian announced her decision to quit politics in October after it was revealed she was the subject of an investigation by the state’s corruption watchdog.
The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is probing her dealings with her disgraced former boyfriend and former Wagga Wagga MP Daryl Maguire.
Ms Berejiklian, who has retreated from public view after resigning, told Nine radio she had no intention of returning to politics.
“I won’t be contesting the seat of Warringah, or any other seat for that matter,” she said.
“I’m going into another different direction and I’m looking forward to the opportunities next year brings.
“I’m looking forward to a much less public life.”
Ms Berejiklian’s last day as the Member for Willoughby will be December 30.
“I’m in the process of tidying up after nearly 19 years in the job. I’m grateful to have served the public in the way that I did,” she said.
“I tried hard every day and I hope people feel I have made a difference.”
