NSW Police appeal for information after constable fires gun at car allegedly driven towards officers

A NSW police constable fired their gun at a car after the driver of the vehicle allegedly sped towards officers in Sydney’s inner west.

The incident, which is under investigation, took place in an underground car park of a unit block in St Peters on Sunday morning.

Three officers were called to the apartment complex about 1:15am, following reports of a break and enter.

The officers confronted two men who fled into the car park and allegedly got into a white Volkswagen Golf.

According to police, the vehicle then sped directly at the officers, who called on them to stop.

A constable drew his gun and fired a single shot at the vehicle, which drove away.

There were no reported injuries.

Detective Acting Superintendent Ben Kennis said it was “very confronting” for police to be “driven at” and “not a pleasant time to discharge a firearm for any police officer”.

“I’ve spoken to that police officer this morning and they are doing quite well,” he said at a press conference.

Superintendent Kennis said police were unsure whether either of the two men were injured.

“We do not know at this point in time if anyone in that vehicle had been hit by that single shot that was fired.”

A car was found alight in another underground car park in Pyrmont about 45 minutes later.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze.

Police later confirmed the car was the same white Volkswagen Golf officers tried to stop earlier in St Peters.

The number plates on the car had been reported as stolen, according to police.

A crime scene has been established at both underground car parks, with the car currently undergoing forensic examination.

Police are appealing for people with information about the incident to come forward.

“We do call on the public for assistance in this matter,” Superintendent Kennis said.

“If you do have any information, any CCTV, any dashcam that might lead detectives to identify these offenders, we do certainly urge for your assistance.”
