The Albanese Government are protecting the people of Werriwa from the scourge of scams and making Australia the toughest place in the world for scammers to operate.

Today, the Albanese Government introduced the Scams Prevention Framework which changes the law to put obligations on sectors to prevent, detect, disrupt, and respond to scammers.

The obligations will initially apply to banks, telcos, and social media companies – where much of the scam activity currently occurs. If businesses fail to meet the tough obligations, they will be subject penalties of up to $50 million and will be required to compensate victims.

The Government has provided over $180 million to tackle scam activity across the economy. Losses to scams are going down for the first time since 2016 as a result of our comprehensive anti-scams plan.

Last year the Government set up the National Anti-Scam Centre, which is a world leading partnership between government, law enforcement and the private sector that uses cutting edge technology to disrupt scams before they reach consumers. The National Anti-Scam Centre also focusses on raising community awareness to help arm people with tips and tools to help protect them from scammers.

The Albanese Government will always work hard to help Australians earn more and keep more of what they earn.

QUOTES ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE MEMBER FOR WERRIWA, MS ANNE STANLEY MP:

“The Albanese Government is determined to make Australia the hardest target for scammers to ply their act.

“We’re seeing positive early signs our plan is working, with scam losses going down for the first time since 2016.

“I’m urging everyone in Werriwa to remain vigilant. Every dollar lost to a scammer is a tragedy and impacts people on a financial and psychological level. These criminals are the lowest of the low.
