Australia Day has always held a special meaning for me. As a young boy arriving in this country, I saw the many opportunities afforded to me and my family and how fortunate we are to call Australia home.
This week, I had the privilege of welcoming new Australian citizens at our Citizenship Ceremony. Watching families take this meaningful step, filled with pride and hope, was a powerful reminder that Australia remains a land of opportunity for all.
Australia Day is also a time to recognise the people who quietly make Canterbury-Bankstown a better place to live. This year’s Australia Day Award recipients truly embody service, compassion, volunteering and resilience.
I was deeply moved by the nominations for Citizen of the Year which included Mathew Howard and Kelly O’Brien, whose strength in the face of the unimaginable loss of their daughter has transformed grief into purpose. Through their advocacy in youth mental health and anti-bullying reform, they continue to honour their daughter, Charlotte, and change lives across our community.
Our nominations for Young Citizen of the Year and Community Woman of the Year impressed me with their leadership and dedication. And let’s not forget the many organisations, like Meals on Wheels, Biyani House and Bankstown Canterbury Community Transport, that play an important role in the lives of the most vulnerable in our community.
This year, I was proud to present a special Local Hero Award to Ahmed Al Ahmed, whose courageous actions saved the lives of many at Bondi Beach. His selflessness, bravery and instinct to help others in a moment of terror remind us what it truly means to be a great Australian.
To all our nominees and award recipients – thank you. Your dedication, generally offered without recognition, inspires our City and reflects the very best of who we are.
Regards, Bilal El-Hayek Mayor of Canterbury-Bankstown
