Sydney, NSW — A socially mobilised vigil calling for peace in Lebanon and will take
place on 15 April at 6pm at Sydney Town Hall, as organisers frame the event as a
humanitarian response to regional conflict affecting children and civilians, rather than
a traditional gathering.
The 6pm mobilisation, organised by the Lebanon Action Group, is expected to bring
together people from across professions and sectors, including law, social services,
policy and trades, united under a “humanity first” call and to condemn the Israeli
aggression against Lebanon.
The group argues the scale and visibility of conflict, amplified through social media,
have fundamentally changed public awareness, making it increasingly difficult to
dismiss overseas violence as distant or unrelated, particularly for Lebanese
Australians. The group further notes, “Lebanon must be recognised in any ceasefire
framework. It cannot be treated as peripheral to wider regional conflict. Civilians
across Lebanon continue to bear the cost of political and military escalation.
Human lives become chess pieces moved by political power, stripped of strategy or
policy, leaving only bodies counted in red”.
Organisers say the vigil will honour those killed in Lebanon and call for peace and
justice in Lebanon, arguing that no population should be ignored in times of conflict.
They add that the mobilisation draws on Australia’s Anzac legacy of service and
sacrifice, arguing that advocating for peace and civilian protection is not political.
