The Arab Australian Federation (AAF) is deeply horrified by the escalating events in Palestine and Israel in recent days, which have led to an increasing loss of innocent civilian lives. We are also profoundly concerned about Australia’s unilateral stance on the situation and its unquestioning support of Israel, a stance that is deeply troubling.
The violence that we are witnessing did not arise out of thin air. Prior to this crisis, hundreds of Palestinians, including 45 children, lost their lives this year. The inhumane blockade of Gaza has persisted for 17 long years, causing immense suffering. For far too long, we have witnessed indiscriminate killings, attacks on children, the destruction of homes, the bombing of entire cities, the killing of independent journalists, the indefinite detention of prisoners, including children, and the obliteration of entire families. The decades-long illegal occupation of Palestine, ongoing human rights violations, and flagrant breaches of international law have been a constant source of concern.
The grim reality now is that the death toll has already reached the thousands, and the situation in Gaza is nothing short of horrifying. It is deeply alarming to witness the Israeli government openly committing war crimes through collective punishment and indiscriminate bombings of civilians and infrastructure. By shutting down the supplies of food, water, electricity, and fuel to Gaza, a humanitarian catastrophe appears to be deliberately engineered by the Israeli government.
In this critical moment, the Australian Government and its allies continue to support Israel under the banner of self-defence, as it further devastates an already besieged population in Gaza.
The path towards a just and peaceful solution demands a commitment to upholding international law, ending the occupation, dismantling settlements, and ensuring accountability through the International Criminal Court.
The Arab Australian Federation calls upon the Australian Prime Minister and Government to collaborate with other world leaders in ensuring the safety of all civilians and to urge Israel to withdraw from the occupied territories in accordance with UN resolutions.
The relentless assault on Gaza will only lead to more suffering and devastation. We implore the international community to stand for justice, peace, and the protection of all lives in the region. It is only through collective action, adherence to international law, and diplomatic efforts that we can hope to achieve a lasting and just resolution to this longstanding conflict.
